Gardening with Vego Garden Raised Beds – Transforming Your Backyard Oasis

Using several types of raised beds over my gardening career- all wood- I was excited to discover and start using the new modular metal ones available at Vego Garden. Wooden raised beds work fine for a while, but will ultimately deteriorate over time. So, I was interested in trying something more lasting with these food-safe high quality metal ones available at Vego Garden that are supposed to last 20+ years. A recipient of the prestigious IF Design Award in 2024, these garden beds are designed with functionality and beauty in mind.

Vego Metal Raised Bed
Wooden raised beds work for a little while but will rot eventually

I found out about Vego beds when I was revamping my veggie garden. I was installing a fence for deer and rabbits, and had always planted in the ground, but was ready to up my game and use some raised beds.

The array of raised beds that Vego offers will fit any garden size and preference from a tiny backyard/balcony to large farmstead. The heights vary from 17″ tall to 32″ that include easy to assemble kits made with food-safe quality metal. The metal is corrosion resistant, powder coated and the hardware is stainless steel so it won’t rust. I like the fact that the beds are using eco-friendly metal materials instead of cutting down trees.

I love this stacked bed for small spaces

I appreciated that Vego Garden raised beds include an array of accessories or add-ons, like stick on solar lights, worm composters, irrigation, trellises, and covering systems to protect from insects and pests (like deer) and excessive sun light. Shielding excessive sun light interested me because when I grew peppers last year in our hot, hot summer, many of my peppers got sun scald. I could have set up some kind of shade cloth to avoid this, but with the raised bed, you can  easily snap on a cover to protect your plants from the elements and deer. I like that convenience!

Vego also has elevated beds

Any system that I recommend has to be easy to assemble, attractive,  and have a lot of configuration options, so you can lay out a convenient bed system to fit your area. Everyone has different needs and methods of gardening, so I appreciated the vast variety of designs available. And talk about design! You don’t want to just plop these beds down in your space- You need a plan!

Planning a garden for anyone can be intimidating but Vego Garden has a great tool which as a garden designer, I appreciated. Called Craft Your Garden Oasis in 3D, I found this super easy-to-use tool on the Vego website, where you plug in the size of your space, drag and drop the bed sizes that you want to use, and then arrange them to your liking. First you plug in your yard dimensions, choose your garden beds, select your addons, and if you want to order the beds, you can one-click to checkout the entire suite of options. This enables you to visualize your dream garden before making any commitments and maximizes the space that you are working with.

My dream garden design

This cool feature really helped in visualizing my space to see what I could fit into my garden. All the different sized beds can be moved around, customized with your color scheme, and the addons like the trellises and covers can be inserted. I loved this tool!

There are no sharp corners or edges, so the beds are totally kid and pet friendly. A rubber edging goes around the entire top to blunt the metal edge and there are rounded cap nuts that are used where your hands might catch on them on the top.

  1. This was such an inspiring read, thank you for sharing your experience with Vego raised beds! I love how you showed not just the before and after but the thought process behind making the space more productive and beautiful. It really proves how much of a difference good design can make, even in smaller backyards. I’ve been researching ways to blend edible gardens with comfortable outdoor living areas, and Ventana Outdoor Living has been a great resource. Their outdoor living design https://ventanaoutdoor.com/outdoor-living/ has so many ideas for integrating raised beds, patios, and shaded seating into one cohesive space, and their landscape services look perfect for anyone who wants help bringing it all together. Thanks again for the helpful tips and beautiful photos, feeling motivated to start planning my own raised bed project this season!
