BloomBox – All-New Way to Buy Plants

How would you like to have hand-selected healthy plants delivered personally to your front door in just a few days from ordering? And all the planning work done by pros for selecting the best seasonal plants to make your containers pop? I have the service for you! I tried BloomBox and loved the ease of using, the variety, and their prices. Plus they sell trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, and edibles. If I needed some potting soil, gardening gloves, or tools, they were available also – a one stop shop for gardening. A great gift idea for home-bound gardeners, BloomBox will be used by me in the future.

Boxed up and organized plants

BloomBox is based in Lancaster PA and has greenhouses and a growing field in East Petersburg, PA, and hand-delivers to customers front doors in 7 counties in southeast PA. Just recently branching out into Maryland to Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Harford County, I wanted to give it a try.

Personal Plant Shopper That Delivers

No UPS or Fed-Ex involved. It was like having a florist carefully deliver an arrangement to my house, but growing, living, plants instead.  Containerized plants are arranged in carriers in  BloomBox trademark boxes and it is like I personally visited the nursery and brought home my plants, and had a personal plant shopper along with me to choose the right combos for my pots. And if I needed a particular sized pot, they sell those too! The container kits were a great time saver for me – already selected, delivered, and the right size for my container.  All I had to do was pop them into my pot with some added soil, water, and I had an instant fall container.

Container Kits

When I ordered, I focused on getting kits as my tired summer containers needed a redo and I didn’t have time to shop at the nursery. The container kits cost between $30 to $37 for everything except the pumpkins, and I noticed the BloomBox website has added fall decor like hay bales, pumpkins and corn stalks that you can add to punch them up. Shipping is free if your order is over $45 – a steal! Plus, hand delivering the plants means no shipping stresses and damage and you get full sized plants, not the traditional smaller ones available by shipping.

This kit was the ‘Purple Pepper’ kit which had an ornamental pepper, cabbages, purple pansies, and mums
I added ‘Quick Silver’ Artemisia trailer along with some small pumpkins to the mix

I appreciated that the container kits contained a ‘thriller, filler, and spiller’ to make a balanced container.

The mums were delivered to me in bud and not in bloom, which I appreciated. That way, I can enjoy them the entire time that they are blooming, about 5-6 weeks long.  The cabbages were also the perfect size to plant several to a container along with other plants. Many ornamental cabbages that you find at the nursery are so large that they overwhelm a container.

Selection

Selling annuals, perennials, container kits, and other fall decor, the variety of plants available surprised me. I needed some fall transplants for my veg garden, and ordered yellow and purple cauliflower, burgundy brussel sprouts, and some Pak Choi. I couldn’t resist a Fatsia called ‘Spider’s Web’, a great little houseplant.

Being in the garden design/landscape business, I know how much plants cost wholesale and thought that BloomBox’s retail prices were excellent. And the selections of different plants was wide ranging for both perennials and annuals. A mangave called ‘Whale Tale’ was on the website and I think I will order that next time. I have never seen that one at a nursery.

And they offer natives from their local growing partner, American Native Plants, in Middle River, MD, which has quality plant material – all natives. For example, you can buy an elderberry or clethra, both natives which I have done posts on.

Support Local Businesses

I love to support local businesses and especially nursery related ones. My recent post on Floriculture Microfarm which is a local cut flower business is proof of that. Check that post out for buying fresh flower bouquets from the field and as well as home and plant decor. Also offering home delivery, plant lovers don’t have to go out anymore!

  1. I’ve been using Bloom Box since this past Spring. It’s fun to go on the website and go crazy making lists of desired plants. Then I calm down and buy what I need. I live in Bucks County PA and am in the area where they deliver. They also have a Facebook page for their customers, “Bloomies”!

  2. What a wonderful option, and I wish I had it in my area. What we do have is Shrub Bucket, and I have several gardening friends who have utilized their service and been quite satisfied. I have two gardening centers near me and have seen their inventory severely impacted – not a lot of choices when you mask up and go. Thanks for sharing.
